A Quick Guide to Healthcare and Biotechnology in the Middle East
"For the rest of us..."
BioPlan Associates, Inc., April 2009
Overview
Until recently, the Middle East has accounted for a fraction of global pharmaceutical sales, but BioPlans newly released A Quick Guide to Healthcare and Biotechnology in the Middle East shows that dramatic change is underway. The Middle East has been low on the agenda of the pharmaceutical industry, due to reliance on strong growth in the US, European and Japanese markets, but the slowdown and cost containment pressures in these markets have persuaded the pharmaceutical industry to cast its eyes further afield.
The total Middle East regional value is around US$10.6 billion and growing rapidly. Multinational pharmaceutical companies can no longer ignore the regions huge potential. Due to varying socio-economic conditions and political developments across the Middle East, it is entirely conceivable for companies to find opportunities for products in almost every therapeutic area.
The high demand for premium products has led to multinational companies having dominated the Middle East. Pharmaceutical companies still need to be aware of the regions dynamics. This is still very much an emerging market and you have to do your homework.

A Quick Guide to Clinical Trials for People Who May Not Know It All
BioPlan Associates, Inc., April 2008
Why should I read this book?
Appropriately designed and executed clinical trials are at the heart of the successful development of new medicines for patients. This book provides a unique view of the clinical trials process. You will be able to see exactly how any given discipline fits in and plays its part in delivering the overall clinical trial program. The successful design, execution and delivery of an effective clinical trial program relies on excellent cooperation, understanding and respect within an often widely dispersed multi-disciplinary team. The chapters are jargon-lite but detailed enough to provide the framework onto which you, the reader, can attach that jargon when you are good and ready. Each chapter also stands alone as a quick dip foundation or refresher. Everyone involved in clinical trials finds it demanding to keep up-to-date with current developments in the field. We believe you will come away with a really good basic grasp of the excitement of the clinical trials process, its drivers, checks and balances, and how you may even be able to contribute in a wide variety of ways.

Biopharmaceutical Expression Systems and Genetic Engineering Technologies
BioPlan Associates, Inc., November 2008
New expression systems and recent improvements available for current systems have the potential to revolutionize the biopharmaceutical industry!Lower costs and efficiencies of newer expression systems are driving these changes.
This book provides you with the information you need to make the shift to increased productivity. As reflected by currently marketed products, since the advent of genetic engineering in the 1970s, there has been little basic change in the technologies used for commercial-scale manufacture of biopharmaceutical products.
Nearly all current products are manufactured using much the same old, familiar technologies primarily using Esherichia coli (E. coli bacterium), Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) as hosts technologies invented in the 1970s and commercialized in the 1980s.

Advances in Biopharmaceutical Technology in China
BioPlan Associates, Inc.,
A Society for Industrial Microbiology and BioPlan Associates co-publication
Every organization has a China strategy, though for many of us it is simply "ignore it." A great opportunity exists in working with China and implementing an effective company strategy. However, winning in Asia in the new millennium will require fundamental changes in partnerships between western and Asian companies. Every company faces the question "What should our China strategy be?" But to neglect China is to forego opportunities to gain efficiency in most of the things we are trying to do. China provides opportunities that allow us to do different things and not just do things differently.
This volume provides an overview of the biopharmaceutical industry, and the state of technology. It will help the reader understand general business practice in China, analyze business opportunities and in identifying potential partners for working in China. It provides a ready reference for all aspects of the world of biopharmaceuticals in China, including general understanding, detailed technical and business descriptions, and detailed information on all types of organizations involved in biopharmaceuticals in China, whether they be companies (state owned or privately owned), universities, or government institutions.

A Survey of Education and Training in Life Sciences Commercialization
BioPlan Associates, Inc., July 2003
Education and training in the Life Sciences, and in Biotechnology has been indicated through a number of anecdotal assessments, and quantitative studies to be a major factor in the effective commercialization of products. Whether in production, R&D or on the business side, workforce issues continue to present challenges and competitive opportunities for life sciences companies. This study focuses on the impact that education and training is having on the commercialization of life sciences products and services. We conducted a benchmarking study to evaluate the impact of levels of education and training in biotechnology. We surveyed 100 senior managers involved in the commercialization of technology, products and services at biotechnology companies in the United States and Canada. Respondents included senior managers, VPfs of marketing, sales, product managers, and others. The ability to meet the demand for a skilled workforce, whether through in-house training or out-sourced education, carries long-term strategic implications for companies and requires accurate needs assessment, and lead-time. This White Paper provides a quantitative assessment of the industryfs current situation, and offers a view into potential industry bottlenecks that may develop based on potential shortfalls in education and training.
